The security and wellbeing of each resident and staff member is a high priority for Academia management, and significant resources are directed to achieving these goals. The perimeter is secured, there is 24-hour controlled access and the campus is monitored by closed-circuit television cameras. In addition to security officers permanently at the vehicle entrance there are additional officers on foot patrol, and consequently residents must be aware of their responsibility for adhering to Academia’s Code of Conduct. The foot patrol officers are easily recognisable with their high-visibility jackets and always carry an identification card.
With almost 1 000 people living in close proximity to each other it’s obvious there is a need to have a Code of Conduct to ensure that the rights of individuals are not adversely affected. Please take a moment to read and understand the Code because along with your rights as an Academian comes responsibilities. It is important to note that the University has its own regulations that also need to be adhered to.

Academia was founded in 2000 featuring the proud logo of Aristotle. Although highly recognisable, this academic profile didn’t fully represent the Academian ‘village of friends’. So, in 2010, the Academian crest was adopted. In 2012 the crest was approved by the Stellenbosch University, allowing all House Committee members to wear it next to the university crest on their official committee blazers.
In 2007, it was decided to structure Stellenbosch University into seven ‘clusters’ – one on the Tygerberg campus and six at Stellenbosch. The purpose of the cluster system is to integrate and provide support to first-year students so that they experience the University as a caring and nurturing place. This includes the mentoring system. Our cluster, called Validus, consists of five senior residences (Concordia, Huis Macdonald, Lobelia, Huis De Villiers and Botashoogte), three male residences (Huis Marais, Huis Visser and Simonsberg), two mixed residences (Goldfields and Academia), one mixed PSO (Olympus) and one ladies’ residence (ISA).
